Strut Dance - King Street Arts Centre

Company Overview

STRUT DANCE

The national centre for choreographic development, based in Perth, Western Australia. It is our vision and privilege to make Perth a beacon of excellence and innovation for all dance artists across Australia.

STRUT UP AND DANCE

A three-year program of benchmark training, collaboration and performance opportunities unique in Australia.

STRUT Up And Dance offers choreographers and dance practitioners the possibility to really engage with great national and international masters, the chance to work with collaborative partners in the making of their own performance and the opportunity to put that work in front of a willing and informed public.

As a national organization, STRUT is now open to all comers and operates on three levels: BODY, COLLABORATION and the PUBLIC ARENA.

BODY

The body is the site of all choreographic practice. Without a highly tuned and ready physicality, the art of choreography is both impotent and meaningless.

STRUT offers sustained exposure to world-class dance techniques and choreographic methodology in order to enrich the body’s range of practice and help ignite and inspire development.

Opportunities will be offered each year with core mentors Ohad Naharin and William Forsythe constant through all three years.

Sustained three-year exposure to these techniques as core training will be supplemented by training in current contemporary technique, physical theatre disciplines and improvisation. This will be delivered by leading contemporary artists, including: Rosalind Warby, Byron Perry, Antony Hamilton, Rosalind Crisp and Jo Pollitt.

COLLABORATION

STRUT has developed a dynamic and responsive programme that builds skills in collaboration. In partnership with the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) and the State Theatre Centre of WA, STRUT will provide pathways to encourage future collaboration across all stage art forms. 2015 and 2016 will see many kinds of speed dating scenarios arranged between choreographers, designers and composers.

[ 2015: Sound Design and Music Composition ]

STRUT, in collaboration with Tura New Music and PICA, will present two 14-day workshops, speed dating, seminars and performances.

[ 2016: Light and Interactive Media ]

STRUT, in partnership with the State Theatre Centre of WA, will offer two immersion workshops where choreographers are given the opportunity to engage with the industry’s best.

PUBLIC ARENA

Opportunities to develop and present work at all levels, from studio showings to main stage productions

Throughout the three year programme, choreographers are offered the opportunity to develop and present work with production values at all levels. The majority of these performance opportunities will segue straight from training or collaborative programmes directly into the public arena.

From studio showings to full evening presentations on the Heath Ledger Theatre stage, or from a sitting room of a suburban house to the State Theatre Centre Courtyard. All manner of platforms, sites and festivals will be available for expression.
