Motor Museum of WA

The Motor Museum of Western Australia opened its doors to the public on December 21st 1994 and was officially opened by the Hon, Richard Lewis M.L.A. Minister for Planning & Heritage on April 2, 1995. The museum was dedicated to the late Percy Markam 1913-1994 in appreciation of his contribution to the historic vehicle movement in Western Australia.

Displays include period settings, repair workshops, posters and other memorabilia and, of course, the many historic vehicles. With over 130 painstakingly restored cars, bikes, competition, unusual and performance vehicles the Motor Museum of Western Australia is an educational delight for all school children, a must for every rev head and for many of us, a nostalgic reminder of youthful desires. The Museum's shop sells videos, model cars, post cards, books, badges, keyrings and other automobilia. Located in the heart of picturesque Whiteman Park, the Museum has ample parking, (car park No 11) delightful grassed picnic areas and barbecue facilities, is on the park's tramline and only an 18 minute drive from the centre of Perth.

The Motor Museum of Western Australia is operated by the Motor Museum of WA Trust and is manned by volunteers drawn from over one hundred member clubs. An extensive range of exhibits and displays are also provided by members and changed regularly therefore ensuring continuing interest for our many repeat visitors.

Western Australia has a unique and rich motoring history. The early days were about overcoming unbelievable obstacles with great endeavour and typical bush inventiveness (the ute is an Australian invention). At the turn of the century there were virtually no roads between our outback townships. A drive from Perth to Bunbury along cattle tracks could take as many as 3 days and crossing the Nullarbor up to a month. But the roads (or lack of them) weren't the only problems. Pioneer vehicles, such as the Museum's 1899 Star Dogcart, were more like carriages than cars and were powered by unreliable single cylinder, single speed motors with top speeds around 25 kph.
